Have you ever been caught in a thinking trap? Like when you smile at your friend in the hallway but they completely walk past you without looking or saying anything. You start to think… “oh my gosh are they mad at me? Did I do something?" You start combing through your recent conversations in head. "Was it that joke I made at lunch yesterday? Or wait, is it because I chose to be partners with Johnny for that project in English class last year? Or maybe - they realized that I was the one that finished the last popsicle at Gina’s pool party in 4th grade. Oh my gosh. I am a terrible friend. I’m never going to make friends again. I will live by myself forever....with that popsicle I couldn’t share from 2007.” If you have ever found yourself in a spiral of overthinking like this, you have probably been caught in a thinking trap.
A thinking trap are those thoughts that cause us anxiety. The ones that make you think that only the worse things will happen. In order to stop yourself from falling into a thinking trap, first start by thinking about why you are having these thoughts. When we are able to see where those negative thoughts are coming from, we can then figure out how to limit them. Here are some common examples of thinking traps:
